INTERIOR BOOK DESIGN

I don’t use any pre-designed templates. Your design is inspired/created from the inspiration of your subject matter. Your manuscript is unique and that’s how I treat your book pages.

What you get in truth is the assurance that your interior pages deliver what your content is all about. Once the reader picks up your book, you want the confidence that your pages keep the reader from putting your book down. Your pages are just as important as your cover, you don’t want to cut corners for either. If your interior disappoints, so does your book.

SERVICE AND BENEFITS

  • You own all rights to your interior book design.
  • Proofing for spelling corrections and changes (when your book is complete) until you're 100% satisfied.
  • A ready for print PDF file of your book sent to you or if you prefer directly to your printer, and working in partnership with your printer ensures your interior pages print error-free during production.
  • Guidance in harmonizing your book’s elements together to create a beautiful composition.
  • Image preparation best suited for print. Touch-ups and editing are only limited to the original image itself. Here are some examples.
  • Illustrations, charts, graphs and graphics are designed/tuned to coordinate (work with) your pages composition. I don’t copy and paste an illustration that was used in another book into yours. Yours may share the same concept/idea, but it will be recreated to be unique for your book only.
  • Consultation: phone calls and emails to any questions that you may have regarding the self-publishing process.
  • Quick and reliable follow-ups to your phone calls or emails during the production process of your book.
  • The interior book files saved and emailed to you for safekeeping.
Includes: InDesign book file (layout, fonts, and any images/content used in your book), the ready for print PDF file (same PDF file sent to your printer), and a web friendly PDF of your book for marketing.

THE PROCESS

  1. We’ll talk about your book’s subject matter and your vision in depth along with the demographic of your reader to establish a solid design direction.
  2. You can either email me or mail me a CD containing your manuscript and elements that are involved.
  3. I’ll gather all the proper printing requirements from your printer to properly prepare your book for an error-free production run, and to get the best print quality out of your printed book.
  4. I’ll create an interior page layout design based on the discussion we have. The initial interior book design layout will include a chapter page and a few page spreads thereafter, showing all elements of the book’s composition. The layout can be ‘tweaked’ if needed to your 100% satisfaction.
  5. Once the layout is approved, I’ll arrange all your text/elements into a final completed book and email you the complete book as a PDF for the first proofing. You’ll send me back any text corrections emailed as a marked up PDF or an itemized list. I’ll email you back your corrected interior PDF. We’ll repeat the process until it's 100%.
  6. Once the proof has been approved your interior book design is sent to you as a ready for print PDF or if you prefer I can send it directly to your printer.

QUOTING YOUR INTERIOR BOOK DESIGN

Every book is quoted on its own merit (complexity). The four guidelines below help me determine how to quote a book, and a book may fall between one or more of the guidelines.

NOTE: I quote by looking over the entire project, break it down, and figure out every cost that is required to get your book ready for your printer. I break down each project (its cost) into a design fee, together with a per page fee.
  1. Design is the structure of the book design:
    • Overall initial layout design of the book (how it looks) — line spacing, choosing fonts and sizes for body text and headings, ornamentation, etc.
    • Prepping all content for the book (front, body and back matter).
    • Design creation/preparation of all graphic content which may include charts, graphs, images, graphics, etc.
  2. Per page is the typesetting of each page and the composition of each page:
    • Adjusting all text to flow properly from word-to-word, line-to-line, and page to page throughout the book by; Kerning, Hyphenation, Widow/Orphan control, letter-spacing, and making sure that all hyphens and all other typographic elements are correct.
    • Composition which may include multiple levels of text headings, lists, footnotes and multiple layouts within design to separate content.

SOME QUESTIONS I’LL ASK YOU THAT'LL PROVIDE YOU WITH AN ACCURATE QUOTE:

  1. What is your manuscript 'character count (with spaces)'?
  2. How many chapters do you have?
  3. Will your book have images - do they need to be prepared for print - are they photographs for me to scan?
  4. Will your book have footnotes, lists, charts, maps, etc (are they simple or complex) - do they need to be created or recreated by me, if not in what format and software application have they been saved as?

BOOK ORNAMENT DESIGNED SPECIFICALLY FOR YOUR BOOK

A book ornament, also referred to as a flourish, dingbat, or embellishment, adds value to your book by playing the part in creating a visual décor that connects your interior pages and book as a whole. It makes your book visually stand out with a lasting impression.

A personalized book ornament is generally between $85.00 to $255.00, depending on the complexity.

BOOK COVER DESIGN

I don’t use any templates, each design is inspired by the subject matter. That is why each of my cover designs look very different from each other.

It’s a fact that a book is judged by its cover almost immediately, and won’t be picked up unless it appeals to the viewer. You’ll have the benefit of knowing your book cover will be designed by a professional – harmonized to flow with your interior pages and print error free. Cutting corners on your cover is not an option if you want your book to be noticed.
